Feminist Present & Accounted For

14 years ago, a TV show about a flighty
young woman having an existential
crisis became popular, & Time
Magazine questioned the death of
feminism over it. Talk about EPIC FAIL.

I’m a feminist. That phrase strikes fear into many men I know, as well as some women. As this article discusses, there are a lot of people who claim “I’m not a feminist!” or “I’m not a feminist, but…”

Poppycock. To declare yourself not-a-feminist is pro-inequality. It is blatantly anti-feminist (back to this term in a moment).

Does any spouse relish the idea that the female partner, for the same time & perhaps with greater skill than her colleagues, will bring home only 75% of her male peers? Or that her career is viewed as lesser than that of her male counterparts b/c of the social pressure to put family before ambition (meaning she’s typically passed over for promotion b/c the investment in her is assumed to be for naught)?

For the anti-feminist women, specifically: does any modern woman hold her voting rights in such little regard? How about her right to make love without mandated procreation? How about her right not to be raped inside her marriage? This checklist, I think, is brilliant:

  • If you are an anti-feminist woman who wants to or needs to work ‘outside the home’ — you didn’t build that.
  • If you are an anti-feminist woman who works and is paid the same as the man in the next cubicle — you didn’t build that.
  • If you are an anti-feminist woman who has achieved higher education — you didn’t build that.
  • If you are an anti-feminist woman in a profession formerly seen as ‘male’ — you didn’t build that.
  • If you are an anti-feminist woman with recourse to sexual harassment/discrimination remedies in the workplace — you didn’t build that.
  • If you are an anti-feminist woman who needs enjoys daycare for her children — you didn’t build that.
  • If you are an anti-feminist woman who took maternity leave to have those children — you didn’t build that.
  • If you are an anti-feminist woman and you vote — even for candidates who’d stop that nonsense in a nanosecond — you didn’t build that.
  • If you are an anti-feminist woman and you enjoy the rights of contract and property law — you didn’t build that.
  • If you are an anti-feminist woman but sadly divorced yet benefiting from family law reforms (allowing you to have custody of your children, for example) — you didn’t build that.
  • If you are an anti-feminist woman who practices safe, legal family planning including contraception and abortion (we won’t tell anyone) — you didn’t build that.
  • And if you are an anti-feminist man whose mother, sister, daughter, wife, girlfriend, and female friends benefit from any of those things — you CERTAINLY didn’t build that. (credit: Dammit Janet!)
Chauvinism Fail

Speaking of epic fails…

I told you it was good! ;)

The right to equal consideration based on merit is basic. What one has the right to do, so do all.

It should not be begged from, nor bestowed by, a ruling class. B/c that which can be given can be taken away.

Take it without apology.
